The Tale Of The Wicked Website

James always considered himself to be pretty successful. His business was booming, sales were increasing, and he was great at multi-tasking. However, he admits that he’s a bit of a control freak. So when the time came for needing an upgraded website, James figured that building one would be simple enough.

“I couldn’t have been more wrong. Seriously, it was something straight out of a horror movie. Initially, I decided to use a simple drag and drop template built for novice users. Instead of being simple, my website became a demon that has haunted me for years. How you ask? There are several reasons.

To start out, I thought when you create a website, it automatically works on mobile viewing. Wrong, wrong, WRONG! My site wasn’t optimized for mobile use and it. looks. horrible. I tried to correct it and my site crashed. It took me days to get it set back up and working. Those days cost me sales.

Secondly, I pulled images from the Internet. While they were clear when I got them off of the search engine, the uploaded images appeared grainy and pixelated. But did you know that just because it’s on Google doesn’t mean you can use them? I received so many copyright violations, months afterward…I had to take down at least 60% of my images. My website looked like a werewolf with mange, with bits and pieces missing from every page.

However, the worst was yet to come. I received an email with the subject line reading, “Hello, James. Need Website Help?” It appeared to have come from the place where I bought my domain. But I didn’t confirm any security measures and got hacked. My clients’ personal information was stolen and all of the search engines blacklisted my site due to security issues. I can’t even use the domain name I paid for and built my brand around. I’m lost.

What terrifies me now? I still occasionally receive messages from that account. ‘We’re still watching. And waiting.’ I’m constantly looking over my shoulder and it makes me scared to try another site.”
