Just in case you’ve missed all the hype about Google new algorithm released last week (AKA “mobilegeddon”), Google is now ranking search engine results based on whether or not a website is “mobile optimized.” Learn more about mobile optimization and the “musts” of a mobile strategy here.
You may have heard the term “responsive design” tossed around…what does the term mean? And what does it have to do with mobile optimization?
Responsive Design Defined
Responsive design is essentially a type of website design that “responds” to the environment. So, if a person is viewing a website on an iPhone, the website adapts to the screen of an iPhone (the same would apply for a tablet, laptop, desktop, etc.)
Think of it this way…one site, all screens.
Why Responsive Design?
We would like to answer this question with a quote:
“Day by day, the number of devices, platforms,
and browsers that need to work with your site grows.
Responsive web design represents a fundamental shift
in how we’ll build websites for the decade to come.”
– Jeffrey Veen
Basically, if you want your website to be (and remain) relevant, responsive design is critical when designing a website. Whenever you attract a visitor to your website, you want their experience to be awesome. Of course, this awesome experience is achieved in a variety of ways, including content and visual appeal. However, one of the most important ways to achieve this is through responsive design.
You’re on your tablet searching for “summer vacation destinations.” You find a place you want to visit and a company you’d like to book it through. However, you are immediately frustrated because everything seems out of place…you have to scroll all over the page and you’re constantly resizing to view pictures or text. Ugh!
(Cue: “Ain’t nobody got time for that!”)
So, instead you go back to your search results and find another company to book the same trip with. This company, in contrast, has a visually appealing website AND it cooperates with your tablet. THIS is the company you choose to do business with…why? Because they make your life easier with the responsive design of their website.
