We’re back with our monthly marketing Q&A!

Dear Amanda,

What about content? I keep hearing all about adding “content” but what is it exactly? And where do I find it? And more importantly, why do I even have to use it?

Content Confused

Dear CC,

Let me start out by saying this: content is king. Yes, I understand we’re going through a new (and fantastic) wave of feminism, but you get what I’m saying. Content is pretty much the end-all-be-all when it comes to making your internet presence the real deal.

If Content Is King...Is Your Internet Presence Royal?

Get Your Business Crowned With SDB.

Imagine this: a beautiful mansion has been built on a prime lot of oceanfront property. There are white sand beaches, immaculately landscaped grounds, a pool, a fountain, a tennis court, you name it. It’s gorgeous. However, when you walk inside…there’s nothing there. No finished walls, the appliances are gone, there aren’t any bathroom fixtures, nada. That’s essentially what your internet presence is without content. You can have a beautiful website with all the bells and whistles and a fantastic logo, but if you don’t do anything with it (and on a consistent basis), you’re going to be bypassed…and customers will be disappointed when they “walk into your house.”

Some Quick Rules For Content

  • You have to update it regularly. Whether this is weekly blogs, adding new webpages or photos to a gallery, or using social media multiple times daily…the point is to stay in front of your customers and to provide them information.
  • Make it relevant. You want to keep you customer base interested. Your followers are like you and your business for a reason…providing updated content engages your customers and keeps you in front of them.
  • Establish your authority. Providing consistent new content sets you up as an expert. If you’re constantly writing about specific topics (like we do at SDB), you’re more likely to be viewed as someone who knows what they’re talking about…as opposed to a competitor who builds a website and doesn’t update it often.
  • SEO + Content = True Love. Don’t be an abandoned house. Search engines are constantly looking for sites with a lot of activity. Content is an easy way to be active, which can help to optimize your business with those web crawlers.

Just remember, CC…your internet presence is a lot like a relationship. You have to put time and effort into it every day.
