I have a teensy bit of an affection for Apple products. Okay, it’s actually an almost full-out addiction, but only because the single device I’ve haven’t broken down and purchased yet is the Apple Watch. Every year, Apple makes big announcements at their Worldwide Developers Conference…and 2016 was no different! As a result of tanking device sales, the tech giant has unleashed a bevy of new features. Today, we’re here to share some of the best aspects of the summer 2016 Apple updates with our great readers!

The Basics

Following their usual timeline, the latest software release is called iOS 10 and is expected to launch this fall. This is generally the same timeframe they release the latest iPhone model. Also, because it didn’t fit into one of my nice little categories: rumor has it that you can finally delete all of the Apple stock apps you never use (Tips and iTunes U, anyone?).

Siri Is Finally Allowed To Play With Others

Apple finally opened up their interactive Siri program to developers. This is actually pretty big news, as it allows Apple’s software to communicate with third party apps, including ride sharing (like Uber) and messaging (like What’s App?). She’s also heading over to Apple’s desktop/laptop operating system.

Improved Lock Screen

The new lock screen is expected to be much more interactive, including live status updates. Basically, you’ll be able to do a lot more from your iOS devices without unlocking your device…without compromising privacy! This change is most likely due to the features and responsiveness of the Android competition.

Messages Get A Facelift

I’m most excited about this update! BuzzFeed got a little sneak peek at the new messaging capabilities iOS 10 will have and I. Can’t. Wait. If you don’t have two minutes to watch the video link, let me summarize it for you:

  • Handwritten note / digital touch capabilities
  • Major emoji work (with both predictive and tap/replace options)
  • Tap back responses
  • Full screen animations
  • “Invisible ink”
  • Animated bubble effects

Seriously. Just watch the video. It’s pretty amazing!

Photos is also the recipient of a major overhaul. Features include lots of facial recognition, organizational upgrades, and a map featuring where you took your photos. However, some folks (and Android operating system aficionados) are saying that Google has been doing these things for years.

Meet Sierra

First of all, OS X has been rechristened as the new and improved “macOS” system. In keeping with their mountain theme (Yosemite, El Capitan), we get to meet Sierra! While the name essentially makes a minimal different, the newly designed features hold their own. The desktop/laptop upgrade includes Siri and offers a lot of cool functions like cut/copy/paste between multiple devices, retrieve and delete duplicate files, and more. It will be really interesting to see what else they come up with on this update!

The Bad News

If your current Apple device is more than four years old, you may want to start saving up for a new one! This list of devices isn’t going to support iOS 10.

To say the least, I’m really excited about this news. Apple upgrades have just seemed sort of “meh” over the last few years. So here, Apple…just go ahead and take all of my money.
