I’m sure you’ve seen it before…various food companies taking advantage of social media opportunities. Let me give you a couple of examples:


Recently, Lay’s has had some pretty outlandish marketing campaigns where people vote on the next Lay’s flavor. You’ve probably seen some crazy ones such as bacon mac n’ cheese, chicken & waffles and even biscuits & gravy. For Thanksgiving, I actually saw turkey & dressing flavored!


Besides the process of voting on social media, I think Lay’s has a bit of a hidden agenda here. Think about it. Most people these days are going to share these crazy flavors on social media when they buy them. Let’s be real. I cannot imagine someone purchasing turkey & dressing flavored chips just for the taste! If you buy them, you’re going to post something on social media along the lines of “omg @Lays totes trying ur chicken & waffles flavor rn #bruch

Or something like that.

And guess what that is for Lay’s?

Speaking of free exposure, that brings me to my next example. Heinz. Just this last weekend, I was eating with my family when I noticed the label on the ketchup bottle in the picture above.

“Selfie for good. Take a picture and Heinz donates.”

Props to Heinz for using social media opportunities for good, but I’m sorry. A selfie with a ketchup bottle? I wish them the best, but I’m going to have to pass on that one. However, for the people who do post a selfie, guess what that is for Heinz?

(I’ll give you a hint: it’s the same as the last one.)

How Does It Work For You?

So that’s all real nice for Lay’s and Heinz, but how can you take advantage of social media opportunities? The key is to create content that your customers will interact with; content they want to share. Once they do, that’s essentially free exposure of your brand. Genius, right?
