Small businesses have different needs than corporations. However, you probably already knew that. You may feel like it’s hard to compete digitally, considering the budgets and manpower behind big businesses. Nevertheless, small businesses need SEO to excel in their markets…just like the big guys do. Today, I’m here to explain a few reason why it’s important.

But First…The Basics

So what is SEO? Search engine optimization, according to Webopedia, is “a methodology of strategies, techniques and tactics used to increase the amount of visitors to a website by obtaining a high-ranking placement in the search results page of a search engine.”

This is basically a fancy way of having customers say, “I found you on Google.”

So, How Does This Work?

There are several ways SEO works to increase your business. Increasing your visibility is important to increasing traffic. Would you go to the #1 restaurant in town or the #499 out of 500? It’s about moving your business forward, no matter how big it is.

There are several pieces to this puzzle:

  • A Great Website – When you build your website, it should be tailored around SEO. If you’re ready to be in business, it’s important to have a great website.
  • Quality Content – SEO isn’t about a “one and done” mentality. If you want to move up or maintain a good search engine position, you must add new, relevant content frequently and consistently.
  • High Resolution Photos – Do all of your photos need to be professional? No. But they do need to be relevant and of good quality to be picked up by search engines.
  • Keywords, Keywords, Keywords – Think like a consumer! When you looked up SDB’s site, what did you type in? “SEO expert,” “digital marketing company,” or “inbound marketing agency?”

Why Is This Important?

As a small business owner, you know that every dollar counts. Every action you take must have some value behind it. Your time is your money.

Take this example: Imagine that you are building a home. Though the interior and exterior are beautiful, the poorly constructed foundation causes the house to be wobbly and unsteady. Could you reasonably expect it to compete with other homes?

SEO is the foundation of your website. While it’s not the part your customers see, it one of the most critical components in achieving digital success. SEO is what keeps the rest of your digital marketing from crumbling, allowing you to build upward.
