This week, we’ve been giving you all the insight on how to achieve SEO. Yesterday, we began by discussing the basics and the use of keywords.

Today, we’re moving on to the importance of site structure.

There are 2 main reasons that site structure is an important ranking factor:

  1. For Google to understand your site
  2. In order to not compete with your own content

Your site structure gives Google “clues” about where to find important content. In addition, it is important that your own articles do not conflict with one another (more than likely you’ll have similar content). The internal linking structure eliminates this conflict. Basically, a good site structure could potentially lead to a higher ranking in Google.

(…and that’s what we’re all about!)

Site Structure Is Easy...

The ideal site structure resembles a pyramid:

Category 1     Category 2

Page 1      Page 2      Page 3

Pages focusing on more common search terms should appear higher in your pyramid. The pages optimized around long tail (less common) keywords should appear in the lower part of your pyramid. It is critical that you have some type of SEO tool enabled on your website. Your content should be optimized around a certain keyword. The SEO tool that you use needs to have the capability to measure the level of SEO on the page you are optimizing.

As you can see, site structure can become involved rather quickly. Don’t worry, we’ll be talking more about the technical stuff tomorrow! In the meantime, feel free to contact us with any questions you may have. Just submit the form above!
