Two words: Shark Week.

It’s the only time all year that I watch the Discovery Channel.

Let me tell you a little something about myself. I don’t like sharks. In fact, they absolutely terrify me. I actually skipped the family surf lesson in Hawaii due to the risk of a shark attack.

(I understand that risk is extremely low, but it’s not one I’m willing to take.)

Anyways, this may lead you to question why on earth I spend an entire week watching countless back to back episodes of a species I fear with every bone in my body.

That would be an excellent question.

I can’t tell you why, but Shark Week fascinates me. And guess what? I’m not the only one!

I would venture to say a large majority of humans are scared of sharks. Yet, Shark Week continues to be a sensation. Why?

I think a lot of the appeal comes from learning about such a terrifying, yet strangely majestic, species from the comfort of your couch.

But I think the majority of the appeal comes from the way The Discovery Channel presents the content. The announcer, the background music, the underwater shots, the insightful researchers…it’s all so intriguing. In my opinion, presentation is the key.
