As with anyone you would consider hiring above entry-level, you would expect some experience. With experience not only comes knowledge, but also the connections and resources needed to take the task to the next level. An experienced agency should have the portfolio to prove it. With experience, obviously comes work. Are they willing to showcase what they’ve done in the past? If so, examine closely. Does it look like they’ve had experience with the work they’re showing you? Or does it look amateur to you? Additionally, does their portfolio feature work from someone directly in your industry? Or at least something related? This is another way to tell if an agency has worked in your industry, if they have the work to prove it.
Ask the agency about specific experiences they’ve had and how they’ve overcome challenges in the past. This will give you insight on if you’ll be able to work with this agency. If you see that they’ve dealt with their past experiences in a way that is unsatisfactory to your or your business, you know they may not be a good fit for you.
