Marketing advice can be so stuffy and (yawn) BORING.
Well, not this week, folks. This week, we’re bringing you the marketing advice you’re looking for in a format you’ll appreciate. Each day, we’re publishing questions and answers from our SDB Creative Group president himself, Shane Boring (really, his last name is Boring, but his advice won’t be).
Q: What is the hardest part of running an ad agency?
A: “Becoming complacent. Making sure we are observant of current trends and being able to see into the future. Not only know what’s coming, and anticipate what’s coming from our clients, but we also have to make sure it’s not a flop. Want to make sure we can invest in it.”
Q: Why do businesses need you? And not do what you do on their own?
A: “I tell my clients that they know their business better than we do. We need them to share that with us. Our main product is time. We give our clients their time back, so they can work on their business to make it better, and not to deal with advertising management. It’s very basic. You need a great message and the right medium to put it on. We have honed our skills through years of training and development. We weren’t just born with it. We have the time and resources to do it.”
Q: What would you say is the biggest mistake people make in marketing?
A: “There are two that our equally bad. 1-They buy what they like. They feel if they like it or they want it, then the rest of the world would too. 2-People think “their baby isn’t ugly.” Not everyone will think your idea is the best.
Q: How do you not make their mistakes?
A: “We want to position it from the consumers’ point of view. We want the business to be happy with it, but it needs to engage the consumer who is their ideal buyer. It needs to tell a story, a story of why this is worth trying out. We want to make sure whatever media we are using, we want a high concentration of people in that area. It’s all based on the consumer.”
What marketing advice can you take away from this first interview?
Keep your focus on the consumer.
If you keep that mindset, you are guaranteed to increase engagement and in turn, gain exposure for your business. But that’s not all! We’ve got plenty more marketing advice to come. Stay tuned for Part 2 tomorrow!
