I know you’ve seen it. IHOP’s new Waffullicious Waffles (if you haven’t, take a look here). The fresh, house-made batter is baked in the IHOP signature cast-iron waffle iron to “chewy, yet crispy golden goodness.” But the deliciousness is not limited to the inside of the lush waffle. The premium ingredients are not only baked on the inside of the Waffullicious Waffle, but they’re topped with your choice of plump blueberries and creamy New York cheesecake or hickory-smoked bacon and gooey cheddar cheese.

Whether you say “yum” or “yuck”, these new menu items get your attention. And that’s just what they want.

A Cry For Help

Promotions such as the IHOP Waffullicious Waffle, Taco Bell’s Doritos Locos Taco, and Olive Garden’s “Never Ending Pasta Bowl” are meant to entice restaurant customers to gorge themselves, and then to talk about it online (or visa versa). Since 2008, United States restaurant visits have decreased by 1.3 billion (blame the recession), with no hopes of improvement anytime soon. For this reason, food chains are employing desperate promotions to drive traffic.

Whether you’re a customer who will run out and try one of these “desperate promotions” or not, you can’t argue the attention it brings the restaurant chains promoting them. And sometimes, negative attention is better than no attention at all (thanks, mom).

But What About You?
