I’ll be very honest with you.
In all my 23 years, I have never sat down to read a newspaper.
Of course, I’ve seen articles online, or I’ll read the occasional story when my mom saves it for me. But as far as sitting down in the morning with a cup of copy and the morning news? Yeah, that’s never happened.
I don’t know why…my parents have always read the newspaper. You would think that I would’ve picked up on it too. However, I did not. I was a child of the Internet and tend to get my news online.
But for the sake of “Kelsie Does,” I did something that I have never done. I sat down to read a newspaper. I tried to be engaged in something as simple as “reading the Sunday paper.” Let’s just say, I’ll probably never do it again.
There are several problems with newspaper advertising. One of which being the decline in readership.
Looking For Effective Marketing?
You've found it with SDB!
“Newspaper readership has been on the decline, especially in the younger population, according to a September 2012 article by marketing professional Joy Gendusa. This means that fewer people in your local business area are getting newspapers, and many of them aren’t reading them.”
-Neil Kokemuller, Demand Media
The simple truth is this: people do not consume media like they used to. They want information when they want it, how they want it, where they want it. And these days, it’s on their laptops or other mobile device. So is newspaper advertising the best way to expose your business? My vote is no. However, it’s a simple reallocation of your marketing dollars. Instead of the money you would spend in the newspaper, consider advertising on mobile apps or search networks (Google, Bing, Ask, etc.). This would not only make you more relevant, but it would also increase the effectiveness of your marketing!
