Last weekend, I enjoyed a delicious breakfast at a little diner in Corpus Christi, Texas (go Islanders).
Along the ceiling, there was a train track with a little train riding along. On this train were small ads (think mini billboards) placed where breakfast-goers could see. Of course, it got your attention and was really cute…but that’s about it.
No, I’m not going to continue with how ineffective this form of “advertising” is. Instead, I’m going to discuss the importance of keeping your marketing moving (no, not by means of a train).
Adjust & Adapt
The way people advertise their business has changed drastically in the past few years. Why? This change was brought on by the way people consume media. Think about it. We fast-forward through commercials, subscribe to satellite radio to avoid ads, we ignore the newspaper (unless it’s online), trash direct mail, and don’t even get me started on the phone book…
Your advertising methods have to adjust and adapt.
What I’m saying here is this: if you are putting your advertising dollars into one of these dead and dying forms of media, you’re wasting your money. In addition to wasting money, you’re making your business look dated and irrelevant.
Unfortunately, business owners who have placed an ad on this diner train would think of this as their advertising. Don’t get me wrong, the train at the diner was nice and certainly unique, but it isn’t advertising. It’s cute decoration at a diner.
Of course, I noticed the ads on the moving train. But could I read them? No. Do you think I’m going to be able to collect contact information or even a business name from these ads? No.
