Times Are Changing…

Really. I did not make this picture for the purpose of this blog.

Pinky promise.

I saw this sign taped to my neighbors’ bushes with the accompanying newspaper and couldn’t resist snapping a picture. Of course, I preach that print media is dying a slow and painful death, but to see it from someone outside my marketing realm was reassuring and somewhat entertaining.

However, a point should be mentioned. Note that my neighbor DID want the content the newspaper provided, however, they wanted it in a different form. Digital.

The newspaper industry has seen better days. Only 23% of Americans read a print newspaper yesterday, falling from 41% in the past 10 years. Substantial percentages of the regular readers of leading newspapers now read them digitally. So, it’s not necessarily that news content (and the accompanying advertising) is no longer appealing, but how Americans are consuming this content is changing. Cue digital marketing.

By 2015, online advertising will make up nearly 25% of the entire ad market.

So why waste your marketing dollars in a medium that people don’t want (according to the picture above), and in turn, won’t see? Wouldn’t you rather put your dollars toward something that people will see and that you will see a return on your money? Duh. Of course you do!

44% of online shoppers begin by using a search engine.

So, if you have something to sell (a product OR a service), you need to be online. Gone are the days where people consult a newspaper (or phonebook) for information. What’s a phonebook anyways?? (That will be a real question asked by the American youth in 3 years, if that…)

Why Write On Stone?

If you don’t currently have an online presence, NOW is the time to start! Because marketing won’t go back to the way things were. Americans won’t wake up one morning and say, “forget my computer/tablet/phone! I’m going back to all paper and pencil!” (Just like after the innovation of paper and pencil, no one said “forget this! Let’s go back to writing on stone!”) Print is becoming a dead media. Don’t waste your money with something people don’t want/use. Digital marketing is what the people want!
