Marketing exposes your business. It makes your business known. It gets you discovered.

You have to show your products to the right people at the right time in the right place. You have to understand the needs of your target consumer and how your product/service will satisfy those needs. You have to then communicate that satisfaction in order for your potential customers to ultimately choose you.

That communication is marketing. It is the process of showing your customers how you are going to fulfill their needs. You have to gain their attention long enough to communicate that message.
