Let’s End the Epidemic

Upon returning from my family’s annual Summer vacation to Ruidoso, NM, I have an advertising observation I have to report. Stay with me…

After walking through the door of the cabin we were renting for the week, the first thing I noticed was the (ancient) TV. And by “TV,” I should probably clarify a little more specifically. This “TV” gave true meaning to a television set. The overwhelmingly large machine not only had a “box” attached to the back of the screen, but also had 5 separate machines (DVD, cable box, speakers, audio, VCR ((yes, VCR)) sitting on top of the box with an accompanying 5 remotes for each machine. It was hard to look at.

This monster machine was a commercial culprit.

Okay, so let me interject for a minute. I’m not a TV snob. Really, I’m not. But it had been so long since I had seen such a machine that it really got my attention. Alright, continuing on…

The TV worked perfectly (after reading the instruction manual taped to the side of the TV to learn how to work it). But it gets worse. The one thing that this television set didn’t have was a DVR. Ummm what? Does this mean I would actually have to be present for my favorite TV shows?? Okay, I guess I could handle that. But something I couldn’t handle…something I just couldn’t bear the thought of…watching commercials.

So after watching a few commercials, I realized how lucky I’ve been to not have to watch them for several years. But really, I tried to think back to when the last time I watched a commercial was and I literally couldn’t remember! Anytime I sit down to watch anything on TV, it’s something I’ve recorded so I just speed through commercials. And I know I’m not the only one!

Commercials have become so irrelevant in our society with the birth of the DVR. Which brings me to my advertising observation. Are you wasting your marketing dollars with commercials?

Okay, moment of truth. Do you know what I did while those commercials were on during my shows? I picked up my phone and scrolled through my Facebook newsfeed, pinned some pins on Pinterest, and tweeted about how dumb commercials are.

Let’s put two and two together. Commercials are a thing of the past. If you’re forced to watch them, you don’t actually watch them. So as a business, why use them for advertising? Go to where your customers are…the World Wide Web.

Give people content they want. Content relevant to their needs. Content that provides insight or entertainment. Quit flooding them with commercials they don’t want to see. Give the people what they want!

That’s where inbound marketing comes in. It’s about just that. Blog content, social media posts, search engine results…all things your customers want! And guess what? When you give your customers what they want, they usually return the favor by giving YOU what you want…their business.

So let’s work together to end this horrible commercial epidemic and step into the world of the Internet. We’ll all be much happier!
