Over the next few weeks, we are going to look at some of the most dynamic CEO’s in business. Although, some have passed, and they may even be a little controversial, their influence is still felt in the goods and services that we use today. Most did buck convention to give their companies marketing success over their competition. Today, let’s look at Steve Jobs and some of his famous quotes that could be tips for business success.
Business success tip #1 Innovate
“The cure for Apple is not cost-cutting. The cure for Apple is to innovate its way out of its current predicament.”- Apple Confidential: The Real Story of Apple Computer. He ask us to think differently than conventional wisdom on how to change our companies to do more, be more and ultimately succeed more. We all know how Apples story ends here, but how does this apply to your business? Business is rapidly changing and whether, your business is industrial, service, or retail, it needs to be evolving.
Innovating doesn’t always mean developing the next iPhone 6, but it could mean business success if you are changing the current way of doing your goods or services to meet the demand in your industry. In advertising, we have seen a dramatic shift from traditional media to digital media. Imagine if SDB Creative Group had decided to not “do the Facebook Thing,” and stick with traditional media only. We would have really missed out on a lot of potential business.
Business success tip #2 Persevere
“When you first start of trying to solve a problem, the first solutions you come up with are very complex, and most people stop there. But if you keep going and live with the problem and peel more layers of the onion off, you can often times arrive at some very elegant and simple solutions.”- Newsweek
While striving for business success perseverance is key. I, recently, read the obituary of another amazing CEO, George Mitchel, Mitchell Energy and Development, who is credited with being the Father of Fracking, and he attempted the process, over 35 times before it worked. His development has since changed the oil industry. He knew that fracking could change everything, and kept innovating until it worked. His perseverance hit pay dirt in 2001 when his company sold for $3.5 Billion dollars, now that’s business success.
Business success tip #3 Collaborate
“But innovation comes from people meeting up in the hallways or calling each other at 10:30 at night with a new idea, or because they realized something that shoots holes in how we’ve been thinking about a problem. It’s an ad hoc meetings of six people called by someone who thinks he has figured out the coolest new thing ever and who wants to know what other people think of his idea.” Businessweek
Clearly, there have been people throughout time that have had success with their company and have done it completely on their own, but how many more stories are there where teams have worked tirelessly to develop, strategize and implement ideas that have made a business have huge success. Steve Jobs said that most people thought his team was a bunch of losers, but he saw their potential and defends them by saying, “You’re missing it. This is not a one-man show.” He saw the value in a group of people sharing great ideas to make the bigger picture of his business a success.
Develop a trustworthy team, and enjoy the process of innovation and collaboration and watch your company have business success. Being a small business is a privilege and an honor and being a marketing company, we, at SDB Creative Group have to be versatile and change consistently to keep up with our industry. Next week, we will take a look at the always interesting Mark Cubin…could there really be something to learn from one of the most controversial CEO’s?
