Before I let you in on which commercial is the most brilliant commercial on TV, I have to let you know a little bit about SDB Creative Group.
SDB started out as a traditional advertising agency, meaning we placed advertising in the form of print pieces, radio, and TV. Everything we did was traditional forms of media. However, with the rise of the Internet and social media, we chose to take our business in a different direction – online. Rather than pushing solely traditional forms of advertising, we began slowly transitioning into a digital agency, placing advertising online, managing social media and designing websites.
A Hybrid Agency?
Now don’t get me wrong, we never entirely stopped our traditional advertising placements. Some of our clients still wanted TV commercials and radio spots, so we continued to serve them. Today, while we would like to call ourselves an entirely digital agency, we are more of a hybrid type – placing mostly digital, but still some traditional.
That being said, while I definitely feel that digital advertising is more effective, traditional has its place, too. Whenever I saw this specific TV commercial, I could not get over how brilliant a concept it was – combining these two media forms.
Mindy & McDonald’s
Have you seen Mindy Kaling in her latest commercial? If not, check it out below:
The campaign features the actress Mindy Kaling, wearing a yellow dress against a red background. But beyond those brand colors, she doesn’t actually say the name of the fast-food chain she’s advertising.
Instead of actually using the name of the brand, she leaves it to Google, asking viewers to Google “that place where Coke tastes so good.” And guess what comes up every time?
Go ahead, try it for yourself.
McDonald’s comes up every time. Isn’t that cool? They’ve positioned themselves in such a way that whenever someone is searching for this specific term, McDonald’s is the brand that appears. Now, of course, the commercial really only makes sense if the person watching it does actually Google “that place where Coke tastes so good.” But let’s be real, who wouldn’t? No one wants to be left hanging like that!
A Hybrid Placement?
Why do I think this commercial is so brilliant? It combines 2 entirely different forms of media, traditional (TV commercial) and digital (Google search). This is a hybrid media placement, and it’s a territory no one has really ever gone before. If you ask me, I think it’s brilliant.
