Today, I’m discussing billboard and sign advertising.
Personally, I don’t pay much attention to billboards or yard signs, unless they’re advertising a house for sale. I drive right past them unless they catch my attention…and let me tell you, that’s hard to do.
But, I’m not the only person on the planet. So let’s look to research, shall we?
According to an Arbitron study, 71% of us “often look at the messages on roadside billboards (traditional and digital combined) and more than one-third (37%) report looking at an outdoor ad each or most of the time they pass one.”

I don’t know about you, but I will never remember a phone number or website URL from a billboard…if I can even read it. Granted, billboard and sign advertising is more effective in higher traffic/longer commute cities given that the time to view them is typically longer.
So, when it comes to billboard and signage advertising, I have 3 pieces of advice:
1. Make your message short and simple. A billboard or yard sign is not the place for your mission statement.
2. Do something different. Get your viewer’s attention with something that stands out.
3. Make sure that your placement is strategic. If you’re going to spend the money on designing and printing signs or on a billboard contract, make sure it’s placed in front of the people that you want to see it.
So, is billboard and sign advertising the most effective way of marketing your business? Well, no. But it’s certainly not a bad way, and if done correctly, it can be effective.
