Digital marketing practices need not be over complicated. I try to keep things as simple as possible, focusing on the things that get results. Things change all the time, and it is important to stay informed, but it is even more important to take action. Here are five digital marketing practices that get results:

1. Know Who You Are Marketing To

This is of the utmost importance. Sometimes the answer to this question is clear-cut, other times it requires a bit more thought and research. You need to know your audience. What problems and questions do they have? How can you solve them? If you have this down, you are well on your way.

2. Create Amazing Content

What is amazing content? It is informative, it adds value. It is not just a bunch of self-promotion. Not only is it informative and valuable, it is interesting and comes in many formats. Digital marketing content comes in the form of blog posts, videos, infographics, slides, ebooks, eye-catching graphics and more.

Some people love to read, some like to watch, some like to listen and some enjoy easily digested and eye catching information that can be scanned. The more variety of content I can provide, the more my audience benefits.

3. Email marketing

It’s a fact: Your email list can be one of your most valuable assets. Email marketing is important, and taking the time to grow an email list is something that should not be on the back burner. Offering valuable content in the form of a downloadable ebook or white paper continues to be a good way to get sign ups.

After building a good list, don’t drop the ball by sending out lackluster or overly “salesy” emails with cheesy subject lines. That is a good way to get people to hit the “unsubscribe” button.

4. Build Trust And Authority

This takes time, it is not something that can be done overnight. Engage with the audience, provide value and trust will build over time.

5. Track Results With Analytics

I like to know what’s working, and what isn’t working. Analytic tools help me to correct course when necessary, and find out if my latest idea or strategy is working.

These basic steps have proven to be effective for many digital marketers. Being consistent in these steps will bring you the return on investment that you are looking for.
