“How do I get to be at the top of a Google search?” This is always without fail one of the questions the SDB team is asked when we start working with a new client. The answer sounds simple but is surprisingly complex: search engine optimization (or SEO).

Search engines are contrary little machinations. I like to think of their creators as tactical strategists. It’s sort of like playing the game “Risk.” You have to figure out the best way to maneuver your website, complete with special terminology, blogging, and paid ads…all to acquire a target audience and gain more market share.

When I started at SDB, I had zero experience with SEO. In fact, I had very little knowledge that it even existed. Oh, what a difference a few weeks make! Each time someone logs in to search for something, whether they’re looking for a pizza delivery place on Google or searching for an apartment to rent on Bing, the great search engine servers log the terminology that’s being used. Those terms are called “organic searches,” which means there were no ads, links, or terminology otherwise “suggested” to the user…the words were just typed in to identify something. The search engines log the phrasing of those words into a database and can link the user’s final click. It’s amazing what they can do.
