Your 2015 Marketing Plan

2015 is right around the corner, and you should be finalizing your marketing plan for it right now.  Think about how fast this year has gone by.  It seems like the older I get the faster time flies by.  My family has a belief that once you get to Halloween, the year accelerates into hyperdrive.  You blink, and all of a sudden it is Christmas.

We have all heard the saying, “not planning is planning to fail.”  Is this true?  Most of the time in West Texas it feels like the robust economy will support just about anything.  You could probably talk to several business owners a day who say that they “shoot from the hip” and aren’t following a marketing plan.  But there are always the “what ifs?”.

What If?

What if new competition comes into the market?  This question is really a given.  There are many companies not in this market who want a piece of the successful West Texas economy.  There are also plenty of employees who are considering opening their own business.  New competition will be present for you in 2015.  Plan for it.

What if new technology poses a threat to your current offerings?  You probably never thought Blockbuster would close its stores.  A little Redbox changed that along with Netflix.  The practice of developing a marketing plan helps you look ahead at what might be coming over the horizon.  It is better to be looking at how your business can evolve than being caught with your pants down like Blockbuster.

What if there is a downturn in the economy?  Bust is the worst four letter word in West Texas.  Plan for the best, but also be prepared for the worst.  Your marketing plan will put you in a position to act rather than react to negative forces outside your control.

What if you exceed your goals?  What a great problem this is.  Your marketing plan gives you clearly defined sales goals.  It also allows you insight into what position you are in to handle the volume.  A couple of big pieces of business here and there might put you in a position where you don’t have the workforce to deliver.  It’s better to be thinking ahead about how to handle growth than to be caught by surprise.

Hopefully this is some good motivation for you to schedule some time with your team and put a plan in place for 2015.  If you don’t know where to start, don’t let that stop you!  We have some great resources here you can download for free.
